Concert Etiquette

In addition to our aim of presenting the highest standards of musical performance, we also aim for high standards of presentation in our concerts. To ensure that we achieve this, we ask all singers to note the Members line up before going on stage and make a formal entrance as directed by the Chairman/Concert Manager. The concert starts as soon as the choir appears – and before the music begins!

We remain standing until given the signal to sit, so that we all sit down together.

We do not talk to each other on stage, or try and communicate with members of the audience, as this gives the impression of an undisciplined choir.

During the concert, we stand to sing on a given signal from the conductor - quietly and together.

We turn the pages of our manuscripts as quietly as possible, so that we do not cause any audible distraction during the performance – particularly during solo passages.

At the end of a performance, we wait for the conductor to stand us up to take our applause. We DO NOT applaud other performers while we are standing up.

You will be given instructions and reminders during rehearsals prior to a concert, but we expect all choir members to have the personal self-discipline to follow the rules of concert etiquette which help ensure that the Choir looks as good as it sounds.

Music Hire

When you first become a member of Aylesbury Festival Choir it is likely that you will be issued with a hired copy of the music we are rehearsing in preparation for the forthcoming concert. We ask for a modest fee from each member to cover the hire charges. As the concert approaches you will be given a form to order music for the following term and given the opportunity to either hire or buy the relevant scores. The music is ordered and sent to the Music Librarian and distributed to members at the start of the new term. The majority of hired music is sourced from the local County library, from libraries further afield and occasionally from other choirs.

Scores have to be returned to source promptly otherwise hefty fines are incurred. The choir will also be fined for marked or damaged music and these fines will be passed on to the member to whom the music was issued. It is therefore very important that we take care of hired music. We therefore ask you to adhere to the following guidelines:

Please

Please return music in the condition that you would wish to receive it and speak to the Music Librarian if you have any concerns regarding scores.

Thank you.
